Apple has released Security Update 2006-004 for Intel and PPC Macs running OS X 10.4.7, as well as versions for PPC Macs running OS X Client and Server 10.3.9.

It includes fixes for the following system components:

ImageIO
LaunchServices

Firefox Universal Binaries

Mozilla has released test Universal Binaries of Firefox for Mac OS X. I’ve been running the pre-1.5.0.2 version on my Core Duo iMac at home for the past two months with zero problems whatsoever.

Apple has released the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update (Intel, PPC). This update fixes general operating system issues and contains all recent Apple security patches.

Final Cut Studio 5.1 Now Shipping

Apple is now shipping Final Cut Studio 5.1, a Universal Binary version of the software suite. Price remains unchanged at $1299; upgrading to the Universal Binary version from the non-UB version will cost $49.

Apple discontinues G4-based Mac mini

Apple has apparently discontinued the G4-based Mac mini, as it is no longer available via the online Apple Store. However, many Apple Retail locations and other resellers (both online and brick-and-mortar) may still have stock on hand for a limited time.

The original G4-based Mac mini was introduced in January 2005.

Software: Photoshop Elements 4.0

Adobe finally today announced Photoshop Elements 4.0 for the Macintosh. The new version will be available in early March for Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 and can be pre-ordered at a cost of $90; however, it will not ship as a Universal Binary due to time constraints.

Equinux has released version 3.0.4 of iSale, their tool for managing eBay auctions. Version 3.0.4 is a Universal Binary (runs on both Intel and PowerPC Macintosh systems) and has been localized into German and French.

The new version also includes more design templates and extends various features like the Amazon and eBay import plug-in, enhanced picture handling and Google Map integration for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Belgium. iSale 3.0.4 is a free upgrade for all iSale 3 customers, and upgrades from previous versions start at $14.90.

Intel Core Duo vs. PowerPC G5 Boot Time Controversy

Overnight, a lot of controversy has popped up over a video of an Intel iMac and a G5 iMac simultaneously booting. After watching the video, I’ve come to the opinion that something is wrong with the G5, as my system at home boots faster than the one in the example.

This morning, I made videos of all my OSX systems booting:

iMac G5 (1.8Ghz, first revision, 1G RAM)

Mac mini (1.25Ghz, first revision, 512M RAM)

Dell Optiplex GX280 (P4 2.8Ghz, 512M RAM)
