Gerald, here's Apple's statement on the battery in the new 17" MacBook Pros:

"It will likely be years before you need to replace it (1000 cycles at 200 cycles/year = 5 years). You can have the battery replaced at any Apple Store or Apple-authorized reseller. The replacement battery is priced at $179, which includes installation of the new battery and environmentally-responsible disposal of the old battery."

I suspect that within a month or two, there will be third party batteries available as well as instructions on how to do it yourself.

My concern with this new unibody, non-replaceable battery macbook pro is:

In the 6 years I have own my 17 powerbook 2 of the 4 batteries I have own have stopped working.

The best time i have ever gotten without doing anything CPU extensive is 4.5 hours. If am doing anything that relates to real computer work is is around 3.5 hours or less.

I used my laptop at college and I charged my batteries (2 of them) at least twice a day–I use my laptop over 15 hours a day and sometimes compress video over night.

SO: if you take those number and the numbers that APPLE says (8) hours of battery life? I laugh. I will take that as maybe you will get 4 maybe 5 good hours of life before recharging.

1000 charges before what? you can replace battery or get another computer?

Anyway. That would be 1000 (charges) / 2 (charges a day) / 365 (days in a year) = 1 year 3 months before I have to replace the battery or the computer–at 4 hours of batter life.

I like to have an extra battery just in case I am no where near power. 8 hours, right? I do not believe because it says “UP TO,” and when they said “UP TO” for my power book, I barely got close to it.

Even if you can get 2 years out of the machine; 3 grand is not worth it.

one more thing, with a computer with such power, one will be using it for video editing, music recording, and such cpu extensive items. You don’t make a powerful computer like this and limit the power sources.

No one will buy this and use it for simple computing, you’re an idiot if you do. Get the MacBook. How can you guarantee 8 hours?

I am and have been a macuser since 1985 and I love most things they do, but somethings are just boneheaded.
