As of March 21st, Apple is shipping the Apple TV system to customers. Since the ship date, interested parties have figured out how to add unsupported media formats, SSH into the Apple TV, and even install a “normal” version of OS X on the hardware. You can find more information at AwkwardTV and the AwkwardTV Wiki.

Apple’s unofficial position on these 3rd-party modifications so far seems to be “you can do what you want with the hardware, since you bought it, but opening up the AppleTV voids your warranty.” It’s nice to see them take this position.
